Skiathos is a beautiful island in the Northern Sporades in Greece. Just a speck of an island measuring 7 miles by 4 miles just off the mainland near Volos. It was made famous, firstly by the Author Alexandros Papadiamantis and then by the movie Mamma Mia!. It was always been popular tourist destination, but in recent years its popularity has grown.
The island is a stunning mix of new more cosmopolitan bars and restaurants and the typical old style Greek family run Tavernas. It has become a home to the rich and famous who often moor up their multi-million pound yachts to soak up the atmosphere of Skiathos Town
Getting Around The Island of Skiathos
The Islands north is largely rugged and uninhabited. The south of the island boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. The island has in excess of 60 beaches, mostly sandy.
Getting around the south of the island is easy with a bus service going along the entire of the south of the island, with 26 stops and can be as regular a 5 per hour in the high season. The main tourist destination is the beach of Koukounaries. Buses to the north are less frequent from Skiathos Town to Xanemos, with only six a day.
Taxi boats operate from Achladies to Skiathos Town. A fast taxi boat goes from Skiathos town to Koukounaries.
Eating And Drinking In Skiathos
Eating out on the island is a must. Skiathos Town is full of different eateries. The most common are traditional Gyros restaurants to sit and eat or walk with. A Gyros is a flavoured pork served in a round Pitta with salad, chips and Tzatziki. Ice cream and frozen yoghurt shops are popular along with crepe shops selling sweet and savoury delights.
In the evening the place comes alive with restaurants serving great food, good wine and will often have traditional Greek dancing or music. Many restaurants will have deals on meals such as three course meals for a set price. The best way to find yourself a good one is just to get out and explore the many restaurants. The harbour front bars and restaurants do tend to be a little more expensive so if you are looking for a bargain then venture into the side streets or Papadiamantis Street. you could even take in a movie in the Skiathos Open Air Cinema.
If you are looking for more nightlife then Skiathos does have a few clubs in Skiathos Town. All you really need to do is head down to the harbour and see where the buzz is. You are sure to find something that you are looking.
Don’t fancy the trip into Skiathos Town, then all the resorts on the island have a wide range of Taverna’s to choose from.
Things To Do In Skiathos
The Island is famed for its beaches. You can choose from any of the 60 odd beaches and not be disappointed.
In addition to beaches, the island good for shopping, water sports and boat trips. There is also the Papadiamantis Museum and Open air cinema.
If you want to take life a little easier then there is a good mix of shops providing treatments, such as nails, massages and foot spa’s involving small fish.
The most popular thing to do, though, must be taking in the sights, smells and sounds of this amazing island.
